The Children of the New Dawn School, Torpa was formally started in April 1999 at the request of the local populace as there was no recognized English medium school within a radius of 30 kms. It was started for the district of Khunti, by the foundress of the Mahila Vikas Kendra(Centre for Womens’s Development), Padma Shri Sr.Karuna Mary Braganza, a sister belonging to the Society of the Sacred Heart, its Indian Province, and built on land donated by the Diocese. The Registered Society, Torpa Rural Development Centre for Women, which is the Society under which the Mahila Vikas Kendra(Centre for Women’s Development) functions, and which is managed by the Society of the Sacred Heart, administers the School. The School was a natural growth from the Bal Niketan pre-primary school which had been started by the Mahila Vikas Kendra(Centre for Women’s Development) in 1993 and which is functioning on its campus.
As its name suggests, the “Children of the New Dawn School” aims at giving the local children, particularly the adivasi children of the area, a good, affordable, English medium education, rooted as far as possible in the culture and the positive cultural values of the area, preparing them to be responsible citizens of good strong character, who will make a contribution to society.
